Finding Their Voice: Walking Talkies Explores Social Issues Through Storytelling!
The sixth Walking Talkies workshop at Ratnawali Girls’ College took a powerful and meaningful turn as the students delved into the social realities of their communities to unearth compelling stories. This session, a continuation of our screenwriting focus, saw an inspiring level of engagement as the young participants identified pressing issues they wish to address through the art of film.
The directors of the Walking Talkies team, Mr. Ravindu Fernando and Priyan Shanaka, expertly guided the students through a comprehensive exploration of screenwriting. The workshop covered a wide array of topics, from the fundamental principles of crafting a compelling screenplay to effective approaches for structuring stories and developing engaging characters. The students eagerly absorbed the information, their minds buzzing with creative possibilities.
The directors of the Walking Talkies team, Mr. Ravindu Fernando and Priyan Shanaka, facilitated a crucial discussion centered on the social fabric of the students’ neighborhoods. The young storytellers displayed a profound awareness of the challenges around them, expressing a keen interest in exploring narratives related to the drug menace, noise and environmental pollution, child abuse, and internet-related crimes. Their willingness to confront these difficult topics with such maturity was truly remarkable.
The level of interest and the depth of the students’ concerns highlighted the importance of providing them with a platform to voice their perspectives and contribute to positive change. Walking Talkies is committed to guiding them in creatively translating these crucial social issues into impactful short films in the upcoming sessions.
